Known Issues

The timing chain tensioner uses a hydraulic piston that relies on oil pressure. Sludge buildup or incorrect oil restricts oil flow, causing the chain to slacken. In interference engines, a jumped or broken chain means valve-to-piston contact and catastrophic engine damage.

The supercharged V6 and V8 engines use multiple plastic coolant pipes and fittings that become brittle with repeated heat cycles. Failure is described by specialists as 'when, not if.' A coolant loss event can cause rapid overheating and engine damage.

Early supercharged F-Types used a water pump design prone to premature bearing failure. The supercharger also has its own separate electric coolant pump for the intercooler circuit, which is a separate failure point.

The rear differential pinion seal is a known failure point, leading to oil leaks. Differential whine under load can indicate bearing wear or low fluid level from a slow leak. The electronic limited-slip differential (eLSD) on higher variants adds complexity.

The active exhaust system uses electronically controlled butterfly valves to vary exhaust note. The actuator motors and valve mechanisms are prone to failure, resulting in the exhaust being stuck open (loud) or stuck closed (quiet). The system can also trigger warning lights.

The pre-facelift F-Type's centre air vents use a motorised mechanism to open and close automatically when the ignition is switched on or off. The motor and plastic gearing are prone to failure, leaving the vents stuck open, stuck closed, or making grinding noises.

The F-Type has a high parasitic electrical drain when parked, which can flatten the battery in as little as two weeks of non-use. A flat battery triggers a cascade of warning lights and can cause electrical modules to reset or develop faults.

The Eaton TVS supercharger is generally reliable but requires periodic oil changes that are often overlooked. Bearing wear at high mileage produces a whine distinct from the normal supercharger sound. Supercharger reconditioning is available as an alternative to replacement.

The pre-facelift InControl Touch system is slow, prone to freezing, and can lose settings after a battery event. The 2021 Pivi Pro system is significantly better. Screen delamination has been reported on some pre-facelift cars.

The convertible soft-top roof seals degrade over time, leading to water ingress into the cabin and boot. The roof mechanism itself is generally reliable but requires lubrication. Water ingress can cause electrical damage if left unaddressed.
